Where would we be without friends? Friends light up your day! Friends are there for you when times are tough. Friends are there to share your delight in life. Through good times and bad times, they hang in there with you. Feeling down? Call a friend!
Every day I count my blessings by the number of friends that Charlie and I have accumulated through the years. No matter where we have lived, our friends have stayed the course. New friends are just people we haven't gotten to know yet.
When I was much younger, I was in an alcoholic marriage and, although I had a few true friends, it was not an easy time. It was a time when I felt hidden from life and the world. It was my job to protect my children and me from other peoples judgment about the life we lived. My husband was a good man, a fair and kind person, and very loving with his children. He and I learned to tolerate our problems together. Until I went to Al-Anon, that is. In Al-Anon I learned to deal with my problems in a new way, and it was due to the friendships I made there that created a much-needed change in my life.
My friends helped to me adapt to a separation from my husband. Through Parents Without Partners (PWP), I slowly evolved into a more capable person. I met a lot of people with many different personalities. We shared experience, which helped me to be a more open person. Then I met Charlie, and my life took another detour. Through is love and acceptance, I matured and grew more confident. With his belief in me, I was able to take the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking course, and even became a student assistant for a couple of more classes. Charlie became my best friend, ever!!!
Today I look back on all of my personal struggles and am reminded that God was there for me throughout that time. He bolstered my lack of self-confidence and low self-image by providing people in my life who were His advocates-my dear dear friends. Whenever I needed someone, God found me a new friend and inserted him or her into my life. Thank you, dear Lord, for your many gifts over the years. And, thank you dear friends, for accepting the assignment. I love you all.
